about Circumcision Academy of Australia
The Academy provides scientifically accurate medical information on male circumcision and contact details of doctors who perform circumcisions on newborn boys, older boys and men in Australia and New Zealand. The Academy was formed on 21 Jan 2010 at a meeting of several leaders in public health policy and medical science, together with other interested parties, at the National Centre for HIV Epidemiology & Clinical Research (now the Kirby Institute), St. Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, to form a new organization now named the ‘Circumcision Academy of Australia’.
The Circumcision Academy of Australia is where would-be parents, experienced parents and men planning to have a circumcision can find the most accurate and sensible advice and guidance they need. As a not-for-profit, the Academy is at the forefront of collecting, analysing and sharing facts and research findings on the health benefits and the newborn circumcision procedure.
The organization is a not-for-profit incorporated association registered in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Its aims are to provide reliable evidence-based medical research information on circumcision as a public health issue and facilitate education on good clinical practice.
In this regard it produced the first evidence-based policy statement on infant male circumcision in Australia (see below). It supports the Rights of parents to make an informed decision about whether to have their baby boys circumcised. (Policy statements in Australia by other bodies are not evidence-based and should not be relied on.)
The best time for circumcision is early in infancy. If the boy or man missed out on having a newborn circumcision, he can get circumcised at any age. Reasons for circumcision include health, disease prevention, family preference, and/or religion. It has no age limit. Circumcised boys and men are less likely to have infections of their urinary tract during the first months after birth and over their entire lifetime, have much lower risk of various sexually transmitted infections, including cancer-causing human papillomavirus, and HIV, which causes AIDS, inflammation of the penis, tight foreskin that causes problems with erections, hygiene problems, and thrush, prostate cancer, and almost complete protection against penile cancer.
- The pros of scheduling a circumcision for your baby boy in the first days of their life outweigh those of having it later. That is because performing it on a newborn is associated with:
- no need for general anaesthesia
- fast healing post-operatively
- minimum cost of the procedure
- much lower l risk of complications than having it later
- no stress – a factor that may overwhelm your son when getting circumcised as an adult
- is much more convenient
- the benefits accrue almost immediately
- the benefits exceed the risks by over 100 to 1.
- The earlier you start preparing for circumcision, such as soon as pregnancy is known, if you have a boy, the happier you and he will be.
- High quality brochures are available for free download on this website (see below).
- The Academy supports parental and individual choice in obtaining elective medical or religious circumcision in the Australian and the New Zealand community.
- The Academy is not aligned with any other medical body nor with any particular religious faith or other entity.
