*Based on the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data of 157,476 male births in 2019. †Based on data for circumcised vs. uncircumcised males (Morris et al., 2017) ¥The percentage of males who will be affected over their lifetime as a result of the single risk factor of retention of the foreskin. Data for STIs were estimated after taking into account the external factor of heterosexual exposure, and population prevalence of each STI in Australia, or when no data were available for Australia, data from the US, the UK, Canada or other countries. Risk reduction conferred by circumcision was based mostly on data for the US because of its abundance. As an example of how the results were calculated, for prostate cancer the lifetime risk in Australia is 1 in 8 (0.125), so for an ~10% risk reduction conferred by early circumcision, the percent affected would be 0.125 x 0.10 x 100 = 2%. The more prevalent the condition, the greater the number of males that would be affected over their lifetime. πNumber of cases avoided if early circumcision prevalence went from ~18.75% (Qin et al. 2021) to ~90% was obtained by multiplying the fraction affected (from column 3) by 157,476 x (90 – 18.75)/100 = 112,200.
